Hikvision vs. Dahua: Comparison of IP Camera DS-2CD2142FWD-IWS and IPC-HDBW4431E-AS

Any DIY enthusiast will happily tell you that Hikvision and Dahua CCTV and IP cameras are the absolute best choice for the task. Both of these security camera brands are extremely popular in Singapore, with Hikvision probably being a more sought-after choice as of now. There is no particular reason for that phenomenon, although generally speaking, Hikvision is the slightly cheaper choice out of the two options.

In any case, Hikvision is the world-leading IP camera manufacturer as of right now, and at the time of writing this (2017), it has a 17% market share. Dahua is the second one with a respectable market share of 5.5%. (Data source: IHS)

For demonstration purposes, we will be comparing the latest 4MP IP cameras, Hikvision DS-2CD2142FWD-IWS and Dahua IPC-HDBW4431E-AS, because this resolution will likely become the golden standard for home CCTV cameras in the near future.

1. ONVIF and RTSP support for Hikvision and Dahua IP Cameras

Dahua-DH-IPC-HDBW4431E-AS

Dahua-DH-IPC-HDBW4431E-AS IP Camera

ONVIF and RTSP are probably among some features you should look for in an IP camera, especially if you have existing NVR. Hikvision as well as Dahua security IP cameras both support them just fine.

ONVIF is there to make sure the camera is compatible with equipment from third-party manufacturers, while RTSP allows software and other equipment to access your camera’s video stream. One example is the ever-popular VLC player.

2. The sensor used in the IP Cameras

Both Hikvision and Dahua IP cameras have a 1/3” Progressive Scan CMOS sensor, the most common one you can find in these type of IP cameras.

When buying a security camera, the size of the sensor is quite important. It directly influences the low light ability of a camera, and this holds true for camcorders as well. Basically, larger sensors are better suited to operate in low light conditions.

Here is how it works: by trying to cram more and more pixels into a sensor that has the same size, additional noise is created, which – in turn – reduces the details in the video. As you can see, a larger sensor effectively reduces the problem.

In any case, both Hikvision as well as Dahua 4MP models have true 120dB Wide Dynamic Range (WDR). This serves to further improve the video quality.

3. Minimum illumination

Minimum illumination measures the minimum amount of light required for a CCTV camera to produce a viewable image. In this category, both IP cameras are the same: both are capable of 0.01 lux and 0 lux with IR on.

4. Lenses used in Hikvision DS-2CD2142FWD-IWS and Dahua IPC-HDBW4431E-AS

cctv_camera_ip_camera_home

Hikvision DS-2CD2142FWD IP Camera

Both Hikvision and Dahua security cameras allow multiple fixed lenses with different focal lengths. Hikvision has 2.8mm, 4mm and 6mm, 8mm and 12mm lenses, while Dahua uses 2.8mm, 3.6mm, and 6mm. Hikvision offers a consumer a bit more options.

5. Max bitrate of the IP Cameras

(Read here to know what is bitrate) Another difference between Hikvision vs Dahua security cameras is that Hikvision’s model has a max bitrate of 16Mbps, while the Dahua’s model has a max bitrate of 10 Mbps. However, that is a bit far from being a reason for concern. Both bitrates of up to 10 Mbps are usually more than enough for what you’re going to need.

6. Weight and dimensions

In terms of weight, both cameras are nearly identical: they are both around 0.5 kg. As for the dimension, Hikvision is 4.4” × 3.2”, while Dahua is 4.33”×3.19”. Again, these differences are minimal and noticeable only if you put one camera next to another to compare them. In practical scenarios, the difference is probably not going to matter.

7. Price of the IP Cameras

Generally, Hikvision security IP cameras tend to be slightly cheaper for some reason. However, there are different ranges of IP cameras with different features coming with totally different price ranges.

Therefore, we recommend that you make your decision based on the features each of these models provide,  not price alone.

8. Resolution of the IP Cameras

Both Hikvision DS-2CD2142FWD-IWS and Dahua IPC-HDBW4431E-AS IP cameras have the resolution of 2688 x 1520 as the maximum.

9. Simultaneous video streams

Here is another difference between the brands: in this category, Dahua outperforms Hikvision, since Dahua allows for 3 simultaneous video streams at different resolutions, while Hikvision only allows for 2 streams.

Note: this is only relevant if you’re trying to do multiple simultaneous streams at different resolutions. If the resolutions are going to be of the same quality, this will not affect you in any way.

10. Frame rates

Typically, you can expect the frame rate to jump anywhere between 20 and 30 fps. Dahua’s technical sheet promises for it to never fall below 25 fps, while Hikvision runs at 20fps with the resolution of 2688×1520, 25fps with the resolutions of 1920×1080 and 1280×720. In all of the other modes, however, the minimal fps you can expect to see is 25.

11. Motion detection

Motion detection is one of the most desirable features for a reason: it helps conserve storage space, as well as saves time when reviewing the recorded footage (since you probably only want to go over the parts when something moves unexpectedly). Long story short: both models support motion detection feature.

Conclusion of comparison of Hikvision DS-2CD2142FWD-IWS and Dahua IPC-HDBW4431E-AS

While there are subtle differences between Hikvision and Dahua security IP cameras, comparing them really comes down to personal preferences. You can’t go wrong with either one of them.

Safe Box Buying Guide 2018 (Free)

Diplomat Safe Box SingaporeWhen buying a safe box, there are multiple considerations you need to make. This can be quite a challenging task, especially if you don’t know much about safe boxes in general. To make it a bit easier, we’ve compiled a comprehensive safe box buying guide that should answer the most common questions you might have:

1. Weight is one of the most important factors of safe box

When buying a safe box, the heavier it is, the better. A thick exterior means it’s less likely for the contents to get damaged in a fire, and heavy weight means a burglar will have a very tough time just ripping it from the wall and carrying it with him. Obviously, a thick exterior is also much harder to penetrate by force.

If you can, try to get a concrete amalgamate-based composite fire safe and make sure it carries a lot of steel components. The fireboard, drywall-based fire safes, and any panel-based safe boxes can be a good budget-friendly option, but they provide a bit less safety in fire situations.

2. Look for a solid steel door of safe box

The safe box door must be built to last. Essentially, it’s one of the most important parts of a safe box. The alternatives are mostly a compromise between budget-friendliness and safety.

For the best possible protection, you should look for a solid steel door with a minimum thickness of ½”, and solid steel body with a minimum thickness of ¼”.

You see, steel can be quite expensive. The more of it the safe box contains, the more expensive it is to produce and the shipping costs can quickly go up as well.

This is the reason why many safe box manufacturers make compromises during the manufacturing process to cut down the costs, so they can offer an affordable product that is still reasonably safe. But in the end, it’s up to you to find the optimal balance between safety and affordability.

3. A good safe box should have a UL approved lock

In an ideal situation, go with a UL approved Group 2 quality lock; Sticking with a proven brand such as these will ensure that your lock will serve your for many years down the road without having to deal with an early failure. Beware of the no-name brands, however, since 95% of these are almost guaranteed to fail rather soon.

If such a thing happens, even the most experienced locksmiths may have a hard time opening it without having to resort to forced entry, which does save your belongings, but renders the safe box unusable, leaving you with a hefty bill.

So to keep it simple, if you see any of these brands, you can rest assured the safe uses a quality lock. Then again, quality locks aren’t limited to these brands either, it merely means these are the most likely to stand the test of time.

4. Does the safe box have relockers?

Relockers are basically another safety measure against burglars. If your safe box ever finds itself under attack, these hardened pins are triggered, which means the burglars would have to resort to drilling in order to access the safe by force. However, that would take them hours upon hours of time, which is more than enough for the police to be alerted and is something they cannot afford.

Depending on the size and burglary grade of the safe, you can expect to see anywhere from 2 to 10 of these in any particular model. Again, you should base your decision on what type of items you’re going to store in your safe box, and choose a model accordingly. Some items are probably not as valuable to fret over.

5. Convenience matters of a safe box

What is the safe box going to be used for? Can you make by with a smaller model, or will you need to store larger objects? There are all sorts of different models that come in different sizes and are made for different purposes, so you need to consider what you’re mostly going to be using it for.

Aside from that, you should install it in a place where you can reset the lock combination yourself without the aid of a locksmith. Also, it should be in a location that will provide quick access the safe.

Conclusion on safe box buying guide

By following our safe box buying guide, you should now have a pretty good idea on what to look out for, and we are confident you will make a great buying decision. Make sure you try our Safe Box Selector, which will help you to find the right safe box within 10 seconds.

Hikvision HD-TVI CCTV Camera: Technology and Application Explained

What is HD-TVI Technology?

HD-TVI (High Definition Transport Video Interface) is an open technology created by the Techpoint company in 2012 and is now used by different manufacturers of CCTV camera systems. As a free software based know-how, any video surveillance producer can develop HD-TVI devices.

HD-TVI is a combination of high-resolution footage and fast analog data transmission. Modulation-demodulation process and image processing by means of an analog method are merged with the features of HD technology, resulting in a great and practical solution.

One of the main characteristics of HD-TVI is the possibility to change a digital signal into an analog signal as well as taking up less storage space. Also, HD-TVI takes uncompressed High Definition video and makes the transmission over long distances via a coaxial cable.

Hikvision HD-TVI Technology CCTV Camera

Hikvision HD TVI CCTV Camera

HD TVI CCTV camera is named “Turbo HD” at Hikvision

As one of the biggest video surveillance companies in the world, Hikvision offers HD-TVI options as analog solutions with high-quality performance. (Note that, Hikvision names HD-TVI CCTV Camera as “Turbo HD” CCTV Camera)

HD-TVI technology from Hikvision is an excellent choice for those who are looking for a combination of economy and great results. Compared to IP cameras, HD-TVI technology turns out to be a low-cost possibility of getting HD footage and useful features while utilizing the existing analog cabling when migrating from one system to the other.

Not long ago, the only way to get a High Definition CCTV Camera system was to buy an IP solution, which implied high costs and the adoption of a very specific technology, but HD-TVI by Hikvision has brought users the possibility of adapting their analog installations and obtain a high definition system without actually making an upgrade.

This means that if you already have an analog CCTV video surveillance system, you can easily get to the next level to HD resolution with a minimum investment in wiring and related infrastructure.

Hikvision HD TVI CCTV Camera

Hikvision HD-TVI (Turbo HD) CCTV Cameras

HD-TVI technology allows you to use the existing coaxial cables for transmitting a 720p or a 1080p HD resolution video, guaranteed for up to 800 meters (720p) and 1200 meters (1080p) with a high quality and reliability, a distance that would be really hard to achieve by a regular analog technology.

In addition, this solution is compatible with IP cameras and other HD-TVI devices, being an open standard. Thanks to this feature, Hikvision’s HD-TVI devices can work with no trouble when connecting them to HD-TVI compatible DVRs or cameras from a different brand.

HD-TVI technology by Hikvision also offers the possibility of remote configuration via coaxial cable, so it is a fact that the user can make changes and set up the system without having to be where the camera is, making it easier to manage the whole camera installation.

Why Should You Consider HD-TVI Camera by Hikvision?

There are many advantages that make Hikvision’s HD-TVI CCTV camera range a very appropriate solution:

  1. As stated before, you can save money in cabling since the installation does not need further materials but the existing ones.
  2. Audio and video transmission is also made through the coaxial cable, so there is no need for additional wiring on motorized domes and other special types of CCTV cameras.
  3. Bitrate can be reduced up to a 50% with Hikvision’s HD-TVI installations and still keep a high quality of transmission without losing important image details. This is possible thanks to Hikvision’s high-caliber H.264+ compression.
  4. Migration to a future smart IP Camera installation is easier; that is because the signal from HD-TVI systems is able to go through UTP cabling, so if there is a new installation being made already with this type of cable, compatibility is guaranteed.
  5. Combining the two technologies (HD-TVI and IP) to get a hybrid high-definition surveillance system is easy. By replacing only the existing analog cameras and DVRs and having additional zones covered by IP cameras, you will have a completely functional and reliable installation while you save some money.
  6. No signal loss in theory in a range of 800-1200 m distance is also guaranteed
  7. HD-TVI CCTV camera systems by Hikvision allows you to use your analog cameras and connect them to the HD-TVI DVR and still get a good image quality, according to the camera’s capabilities.
  8. HD-TVI Camera systems offer a no-delay transmission since video digitalization does not occur in the camera (as in IP Camera systems) so the transmission is immediate.
  9. There is no difference between the installation method of analog and HD-TVI camera systems, so you will not be charged a higher cost for the extra knowledge required for an IP camera installation.

HD-TVI technology by Hikvision is always improving. Each solution provides high-resolution devices (up to 5 MP and 4K video output) and the constant research and development keeps bringing even more efficient products and installations that bring you the possibility of having a high definition camera system without the need of replacing any of the cabling previously installed for analog devices or making expensive substitutions with IP cameras.
